Argentina
The Republic of Argentina is located in South America. The President is Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, elected in December 2007.
Argentina is still trying to make peace with its turbulent past. In the 1950s and the 1960s, the country experiences strong economic growth, accompanied by an increase in political violence. IN 1973 Juan Perón began his third term as president, but died while in office; as a result his wife Isabel became President. In 1976 a coup d’ètat put Argentina under a military dictatorship, where State-sponsored terrorsim became a norm and the Triple A (Alianza Anticomunista Argentina, a violent anti-communist organization) terrorized anyone who disagreed with them. This period in Argentine history is known as the “Dirty War”, in which the military government used repressive measures to control opposition and leftist groups. As a result, thousands of people were kidnapped, brought in clandestine centers, tortured and abuses, and killed just because they disagreed with the government. In some cases individuals would be murdered just for being associated with human rights and peace movements. There were a number of activists who just simply disappeared and most of these disappearances have been attributed to the military government. In Spanish these people are called desaparecidos and to this day the exact number of them has not been calculated.
In 1982, Argentina was defeated by the British in the Falkland Wars, which eventually led to the democracy being restored in 1983.
In Argentina, those responsible for the kidnappings and muders during the "Dirty War" have begun to be brought to justice.
The conditions in Argentine prisons are still deplorable, as well as women’s rights, as domestic violence often goes unchecked by the police system and sexual violence is often ignored by key legal and medical players. The access to legal reproductive services in Argentina is severly limited often leading to preventable medical complications and deaths.
The great challenge for Argentina is ensuring that national laws adhere to international obligations to promote and protect the rights of all individuals within the country.
