The People's Republis of Bangladesh is located in South Asia. The Prime Minister has been Sheikh Hasina Wajed since January 6, 2009.

The nation was created in 1947, during the partition of India and Pakistan, when it became the eastern portion of Pakistan. For years, those living in Bangladesh felt that western Pakistan neglected the state and as a result many sprung into action. In 1971, however, after various bouts of social unrest, the independence war brought to the creation of the State of Bangladesh.
Famines, natural catastrophes, diffused poverty and military coups followed. Many of these issues were aggravated by the fact that Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated states in the world. In 1972 the constitution of Bangladesh was created and in 1991 democracy was restored to the country.

After seven years of unrest, the first elections since democracy was restored were held in 2009, with a large victory to the Awami League. Constitutionally guaranteed rights, suspended for most of 2007 and 2008, were restored and the new government under Prime Minister Hasina has promised to confront the serious issues regarding human rights in the country.
However, extrajudicial killings, torture under police custody, and impunity towards security forces have continued regardless of the progress in human rights issues.
