Cambodia

The Kingdom of Cambodia is located in South East Asia. The head of state is King Norodom Sihamoni and the Prime Minister is Hun Sen.

After gaining independence from France in 1953, Cambodia went through a period of political instability and wars, with its  involvement in the Vietnam War, the coup d’état by Lon Nol, the Khmer Rouge terror regime and the Vietnamese invasion being the highest points of instability.
In 1993, the country became a constitutional monarchy.

Respect for human rights in Cambodia is highly limited, and 2009 marked an increase in the repression of freedom of the press, the abuse of the judicial system to silence criticism against the government, and the imposition of new strict measures to restrict peaceful protests.
The government uses persecution, physical threats, violence, and arbitrary arrest, to silence political opponents, journalists, activists in earth rights and trade unionists.

Certain military officers, involved in cases of torture, extrajudicial killings and political violence, have been promoted, regardless of their track record regarding human rights.
The use of force to evict the poor from cities and confiscate land from farmers has reached dangerous levels. Leaving many of the most vulnerable individuals with little to no resources. Often military units deal with these evictions using violent or dehumanizing methods.
