1992: Chakufwa Chihana, Malawi

Promoting a Democratic Society and Workers' Rights.

A pro-democracy advocate and trade union leader, Chakufwa Chihana realized success in 1993 when the Malawi government introduced a multi-party democracy. Chihana went on to lead one of Malawi's three major political parties and served as the country's second Vice-President. Chihana passed away in 2006.
