East Timor

East Timor is a Republic of south eastern Asia. The President is José Ramos-Horta, elected in 2007.

East Timor was a Portuguese colony since 1975 when, during the Carnation Revolution in Portugal, it declared its independence. Subsequently, the Indonesian army took control of the country, slaughtering civilians.
In 1999, after strong international pressure, a referendum was held were the indipendentist party won with a strong majority. However  the country was devastated by a wave of violence, interrupted only by the UN coordinated peacekeeping mission. East Timor became an full fledged independent state in 2002.

In February 2008 a group of military rebels tried a coup d’état, attempting to the life of the President José Ramos-Horta, who was seriously wounded, and of the Prime Minister Xana Gusmão, unharmed.

Police and the judiciary are feeble institutions.
Impunity for the serious human rights violations committed during the transition from Indonesian occupation in 1999 and during the crisis of 2006 (half of the military forces rebel to the government, stirring a civil war.

The long-time waited report of the Indonesia-East Timor Commission on Truth and Reconciliation has been delivered to the Indonesian and East Timor governments. The United Nations have boicotted the Commission’s inquest for the strong preoccupations regarding impunity.
The number of evacuations of people residing in camps escaping the 2006 violence, are still very high.
