Egypt

The Arab Republic of Egypt is located in North Africa. Since 1981 President Mohamed Hisni Mubārak has ruled the country.

Since 1981 the state of emergency has been always upheld. In May 2009 it was further delayed. This law allows thousands of political prisoners to be held in administrative detention, many for at least a decade, if n ot more.
The government is currently preparing a new lcounter-terrorism law, that would grant emergency powers permanently to authorities, essentially enabling arbitrary detention and unfair trials.
Journalists are threatened with incarceration, and hundreds of political activists are arrested in the country just for expressing their opinions.
The use of torture and abuse in these cases has become the norm.

Authorities have used force - often lethal force - against immigrants and refugees who attempt to enter Israel. They have forced repatriated refugees and those asking for political asylum back to their home countries, where they often face torture and death upon return.

The Egyptian government only recognizes three religions, all individuals who fall outside of these religions are not allowed to legally identify with their faith. This rule greatly endangers individual righta to freely express on'e religion.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) has been prohibited in Egypt since 2007. However, the FGM still occurs in the country and many organizations estimate that anywhere from 80% to 97% of women in the country have undergone the procedure.
