Event: Memorial Service for Sonia Pierre

(2012-02-01) Sonia Pierre — founder of the Movement of Haitian-Dominican Women (MUDHA) and 2006 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award Laureate — was a tireless advocate for Dominicans of Haitian descent in the Dominican Republic.
In the face of threats and fierce media campaignsagainst her, she persevered so that Dominican children of Haitian descent could realize their rights to nationality, healthcare, and education. She spent most of her 48 years voicing the rights and concerns of her disenfranchised community in local and international arenas. We will miss her brave efforts, but we knowher work will go on.
“We will carry on Sonia’s fight against discrimination, against exclusion and racism. This movement was made stronger by her heroic efforts and today, we continue to be inspired by her example — a life lived in defense of dignity in the Dominican Republic,” said Kerry Kennedy, President of the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights.
Sonia is survived by her children Solange Manuela, Charlemane Ernesto, Minerva Leticia and Humberto Alejandro, and her grandchildren Gael and Israel.
Please join us with Sonia’s family, friends and colleagues of MUDHA, and RFK Center President Kerry Kennedy in honoring an exemplary woman, mother, grandmother, and human rights champion.
