1989: Fang Lizhi, China

Advocating for Democracy and Freedom of Education in China

Prominent astrophysicist and professor, Fang Lizhi openly advocated democracy and the freedom of education in China. Blamed for the student rebellion at Tiananmen Square, Lizhi left China in 1990.

Fang Lizhi continued his activism in the United States for over 20 years until he passed away in April 2012.
