Honorary citizenship from Tuscan Municipality bestowed on Aminatou Haidar

 

The Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights and the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation of Europe congratulate RFK Human Rights Award Laureate Aminatou Haidar on receiving honorary citizenship from the Municipality of Montespertoli, in the Province of Florence, in Italy.

This is the second honor bestowed on Ms Haidar in 2011 from a Tuscan municipality, after Sesto Fiorentino presented honorary citizenship to Ms. Haidar in May.

The RFK Center was established in 1968 to carry on the legacy of the late U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy. Today, through the RFK Human Rights Award, the RFK Center honors courageous human rights defenders from around the world who have dedicated their lives to overcoming serious human rights violations.
The Robert F. Kennedy Foundation of Europe was created in 2005 to promote and build on the work of the RFK Center in Europe.

In 2008, Aminatou Haidar received the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award for her courageous non-violent work promoting the civil, political, social, cultural and economic rights of the people of Western Sahara, including the right to freedom of speech and association and to self-determination.
The RFK Center partners with Ms. Haidar to increase visibility and dialogue about ongoing rights violations in Western Sahara.
