Indigenous Peoples Rights

Indigenous peoples’ rights is a part of human rights concerned with fostering peace among the different cultures and people of the world. In 1994 in Geneva, Switzerland, the International Covenant on the Rights of Indigenous Nations was drafted marking the first modern international law dealing with indigenous rights.

These rights were sanctioned in the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, approved by the UN General Assembly in 2007.
The declaration underlines the right of indigenous peoples to maintain and strengthen their institutions, culture and traditions, and to pursue their development following their needs and aspirations.

The declaration furthermore affirms explicitly that indigenous people have the right to self-determination and to control their land and resources.
