The Republic of Kenya is located in Eastern Africa. The President is Mwai Kibaki.

In December 2007 general elections in Kenya were followed by unimaginable violence, with more than 1,000 deaths and 300,000 individuals evacuated. To ease violence, the United Nations and the African Union mediated an agreement regarding the situation. As a result, power is shared between the main parties involved, which were President Kibaki’s Party of National Unity and the Orange Democratic Movement-Kenya led by Raila Odinga. Further agreements have permitted the parties to carry out constitutional, land, and electoral reforms.

The government has not created a system that brings to justice those responsible for serious human rights violations after elections. In fact, many of the perpetrators of violence have not been  brought to justice and while the government has promised reform, election laws have not been put into effect.

During 2009 there have been extrajudicial killings, excessive use of force by police and the military, and reported cases of violence and abuse towards civilians during disarmament operations.

Violence against women and girls is pervasive throughout the country.

The country has also had to deal with a serious refugee crisis, attempting to meet the needs of thousands of Somali refugees in camps in the northern region of Kenya. However, many of these camps are overcrowded and lack the adequate resources to continue functioning in a safe manner.
