LaogaiLaogai is a particular method of forced labor still adopted extensively today in the People’s Republic of China. There are now over a thousand such labor camps still active, where millions of men, women and children in forced labor work for the advantage of the regime and of various multinational companies investing or producing in China.Mao Zedong inaugurated the Laogai in 1950, following the model of the Russian gulag. While the Nazi lagers were closed in 1945 and the Soviet gulags were not used since the 1990, tha Chinese laogai are still in function. The word LAOGAI is an abbreviation of “LAODONG GAIZAO DUI” and means “reform through labor”. |
