Myanmar (once Burma) is a Republic, whose head of state is General Than Shwe.

A hurricane in May 2009 devastated the southern part of the country, and has prevented the referendum on a draft of constitution, that should have been followed by elections in 2010.
Immediately after the hurricane, government prevented international donors to send humanitarian aid. The situation improved after the visit of the Un Secretary General, but government has continued to obstruct the arrival of help.

2009 marks the last arrest and trial of Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the opposition party, at house arrest since 2003: she was sentenced to other 18 months of house detention.
Political prisoners are over 2,000, many sentenced through unfair trials. It confirms that the military government has no intention of opening political participation in elections.

The military continue to perpetrate abuses against civilians in areas of ethnic conflicts, with extrajudicial killings, forced labor and sexual violence, in particolar against the karen people in the south of the country, now considered a crime against humanity.

The government has developed projects on gas and hydroelectric power plants with private and public companies, and this has lead to human rights  violations in the involved areas.
