The RFK Social Justice Fellowship provides invaluable training and experience for a recent law school graduate preparing for a career in human rights.
Duties will include, but not be limited to, conducting extensive research on the 2010 RFK Human Rights Award laureate's work, his/her country of origin, its human rights landscape, guiding national and international laws, and related U.S. and international policy. In addition to completing critical background research, the RFK Fellow will work closely with the RFK Center Director and programmatic staff to develop long-term strategies, legal actions and advocacy campaigns to support the 2010 laureate. The RFK Social Justice fellow will also assist with RFK Center’s broader human rights work, providing substantive and administrative support as needed.
The Social Justice Fellowship is a one-year position beginning in September 2010.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
The ideal candidate will have experience with domestic and international human rights mechanisms; working knowledge of the United Nations system, regional human rights systems and multi-lateral institutions; ability to maintain active contacts with key stakeholders in the aforementioned systems to support the goals and objectives of the RFK Human Rights Award laureates; ability to master complex human rights issues under tight deadlines; and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
A Juris Doctor’s degree is required. Fluency in Spanish, French or Arabic is strongly preferred.
Salary: $40,000

Interns will be asked to perform a variety of tasks in order to help with the Advocacy Team. (This is by no means an exhaustive list):
* Conduct factual research and draft memoranda on the human rights situation in countries of interest to the Center and on thematic issues (for example, the human right to health, the right to development, etc.);
* Conduct research on the application of international human rights norms to country conditions, developments in the domestic legal systems of specific countries and their implications for human rights, and other questions;
* Prepare documents for submission to government or U.N. officials;
* Attend and report on briefings, Congressional hearings, symposia and other meetings;
* Monitor sources of information on countries and issues of concern to the Center; and collect, organize and analyze relevant information;
* Provide administrative support to Center Staff on an as-needed basis.
Applicants must have completed at least one year of law school or graduate school and have a demonstrated interest in human rights. Ability in one of the following languages is helpful, but not required: Arabic, French, Haitian Creole, or Spanish. Please note that internships are unpaid.
