Pakistan

Pakistan is an Islamic Republic of Southern Asia. In 2008 Asif Ali Zardari was elected President (he is the widower of Benazir Bhutto, the leader of the opposition assassinated in 2007).

A civilian government  was elected in February 2009, and released prisoners detained during the state of emergency of November 2007 but has not fulfilled the promise of guaranteeing the protection of human rights.

Alarm for human rights concern the abuses committed by police forces confronting terrorism, the judiciary’s failure in becoming an independent body for justice, the continued cases of torture and abuses on suspects of terrorism and other crimes, the disappearance of terrorist suspects, military abuse con tribal areas, and discriminating and abusing laws for minorities and women.

The Afghan and US governments have repeatedly urged Pakistan to destroy the bases from where the Taliban launch attacks on Afghanistan.  Notwithstanding the Pakistani protests, the US forces operating in Afghanistan have intensified the launch of  missiles over border in Pakistan.
