Perù is a Republic of South America. The President, elected in 2006, is Alan García Pérez

Perù’s recent history (1980-2000) is marked by the conflict between the Peruvian state and two armed leftist groups: the Maoist militants of Sendero Luminoso and the Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru (MRTA).
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, created in 2000 to determine the effects of the war, in its conclusions in 2003 stated that the conflict caused the death of 70,000 citizens, mainly in the Andean and quechua-speaking areas.

In 2009 the ex President Alberto Fujimori was charged and sentenced to 25 years for serious human rights violations. However others, responsible for the crimes committed during the armed conflict,  have had a different treatment, with the majority of the perpetrators still evading justice. Investigations on massacres and forced disappearances by governmental forces are obstructed by the army’s lack of cooperation.
