Poland is a Repubblic of Central Europe. Lech Kaczyński was elected President in 2005.

The country was one of the satellite states of the USSR from the end of World War II until 1989, when the first partially free elections were held. The Solidarity (Solidarnosc) movement won against the communist party.
Poland is a member of the European Union since 2004.

2007 marked a difficult year in Poland for LGBT issues, with a negative attitude towards the LGBT community by the  conservative government of the Kaczyński twins (Lech was President of the Republic, and his twin brother Jaroslaw was Prime Minister from 2006 to 2007).
Discriminations continued in subsequent years, as well as obstacles in accessing services guaranteeing reproductive rights.

Poland has abolished the death penalty and has ratified the main international agreements regarding human rights.
