RFK Center mourns the passing of George McGovern

(2012-10-21) On behalf of the staff and board of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights, I join our country in mourning the passing of George McGovern, who Robert Kennedy famously called "the most decent man in the Senate." Through decades of leadership, and even in moments of defeat, Senator McGovern's faith in public service and his belief in America's ability to spread peace and justice in the world never faltered.

From his opposition to the Vietnam War, to his promotion of electoral transparency, to his fight against hunger through the World Food Programme and President Kennedy’s Food for Peace, Senator McGovern was on the front-lines of progress at every stage of his career. His legacy lives on in the generations he inspired.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, especially daughters Ann, Susan, and Mary, during this difficult time.

-- Kerry Kennedy, President, Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights
