Robert F. Kennedy Speaks at the University of Georgia

My firm belief is that if we are to make progress in this area -- if we are to be truly great as a nation -- then we must make sure that nobody is denied an opportunity because of race, creed, or color.

On May 6, 1961, as the Freedom Riders headed south to begin their historic fight for civil rights, Robert F. Kennedy delivered his first public speech as a young attorney general. Speaking at the University of Georgia Law School, Kennedy outlined his brother's administration's aggressive stance toward promoting civil rights and opportunity for all Americans.

“Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”

Robert F. Kennedy
Capetown, June 6th 1966
