Salvador Sarmiento

Advocacy Officer, RFK Partners for Human Rights

Salvador G. Sarmiento is an Advocacy Officer at the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights. He is responsible for the Center for Human Rights’ programs on Mexico and oversees RFK Partners’ advocacy on the U.S. Gulf Coast and right to food.

Mr. Sarmiento overseas the RFK Center’s partnership with 2010 RFK Laureate Abel Barrera Hernández of the Tlachinollan Center for Human Rights of the Montaña. Together with Tlachinollan, the RFK Center works to ensure that U.S. assistance does not reinforce patterns of human rights violations committed against rural and indigenous communities in Guerrero, Mexico, by both state and private actors.

He also oversees the partnership with 2005 RFK Laureate Stephen Bradberry, of the Alliance Institute, a training organization that grows the capacity of Gulf Coast communities that have suffered the impact of several natural disasters, and now, the BP drilling disaster.

Sarmiento’s advocacy has focused on issues of regional concern in the Americas, including the impact of U.S. assistance on human rights in Mexico, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. His areas of expertise include the impact of U.S. law and policy on the right to food, water and health in Haiti and the challenges to disaster assistance policy.

Mr. Sarmiento earned a B.A. in International Studies from the University of California, Irvine, and a J.D. from King Hall at the University of California, Davis School of Law.

“Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”
