Santiago Canton to speak about human rights violations in Mexico

(2012-08-14) This Thursday, August 16, Santiago A. Canton, Director of RFK Partners for Human Rights, will speak at the Woodrow Wilson Center's panel: "Under pressure 'from above?' Human rights violations and civilian law enforcement in Mexico."  Canton will be joined Alejandro Anaya Munoz of the Centro de Investicacion y Docencia Economicas and by Maureen Meyer of the Washington Office on Latin America.

On August 3, the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights delivered a "friend of the court" brief to Mexico's Supreme Court of Justice regarding international standards for limiting military jurisdiction. In what could be a historic decision, Mexico's Supreme Court is discussing 28 cases dealing with the military's authority to investigate its members for abuses committed against civilians. The amicus brief outlines the Inter-American Human Rights system’s  jurisprudence on military jurisdiction. It also details the legal justifications provided by the Inter-American Court and Commission for prohibiting military jurisdiction in cases of abuse committed by members of the military against civilians.
