STTP Defender Wei Jingsheng Remembers Fang Lizhi

(2012-04-11) On April 6, 1989 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award Laureate Fang Lizhi passed away. An inspiring democracy and human rights activist, Professor Fang is remembered by many as the "father" of the Tiananmen student movement. Throughout his life, in China and later in exile in United States, he never stopped reminding us that all governments have an ongoing obligation to uphold human rights.

Recently, Wei Jingsheng -- 1994 RFK Human Rights Award Laureate, RFK Speak Truth To Power defender, and fellow Chinese dissident -- paid tribute to Professor Fang in a short piece. In his tribute, Wei avers:

"Though the democracy movement has been weakened in China, Fang did not waste his life. Being a tragic hero does not tarnish the true essence of heroism."
